ROH on HDNet 2-22-10

We get set for another week of real, professional wrestling on Monday Nights as Ring of Honor comes to you on HDNet Tonight Rhett Titus takes on El Generico to start things off. More importantly, however, the 6 time ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscos put their titles on the line against the Young Bucks who earned the title opportunity just one week ago.
Off the top of the program we see highlights from February 13th, ROH’s 8th Anniversary in New York City. Cornette is reminding then Champion Austin Aries that any decision other than a clean pinfall or submission will go to the three judges to decide the winner. We’ll see more highlights later, but first we go to the ring where “Addicted to Love” Rhett Titus is making his way down to the ring to face El Generico.
Rhett Titus vs. El Generico
Hog discusses the mental state of Generico after his long time partner, Kevin Steen, turning his back on the Generic Luchadore as he comes to the ring. Inside, he offers Titus a hand shake. Rhett rubs his hand inside his pants and shakes Generico’s hand and this match is under way. Titus’s focus is split between Generico and the fans who continually taunt “Addicted to Love,” but Rhett is still in control of the match. He shares a few choice words with the Generic Luchadore and that only works to fire Generico up. He chases Rhett outside the ring and flies over the ropes onto his opponent, but another risky attempt at a high flying move and Rhett Titus is back in control. Titus slows the match down to his pace again, but an atomic drop fires El Generico up once more. The fans help Generico out, but takes a bit too much time and Titus is right back in control and on the attack. Generico is able to explode out of the corner with a kick, leading into a half nelson suplex but Titus is too close to the ropes for the pin. The Generic Luchadore is clearly frustrated, loses his focus and Rhett Titus gets a small package (I’ll say it, Prazak will not) for the victory.

Winner: “Addicted to Love” Rhett Titus
Backstage, Kyle Durden is with Colt Cabana. Durden asks if El Generico’s condition will affect him in the match. Cabana says it will not, despite Generico being a friend of Cabana’s. Kyle interrupts Colt to go outside where Necro Butcher is looking for Erick Stevens.
Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana vs. Bobby Shields
Back at ringside, Bobby Shields is already in the ring waiting for Cabana’s arrival. The fans are fired up for Cabana as he and Shields follow the Code of Honor, shaking hands before the bell, and this match is under way. Colt backs Bobby into the corner where Shields smacks Cabana, but it doesn’t even faze the Chicago citizen. Cabana backs him into another corner and asks for another smack, which he blocks. Cold looks to be toying with Bobby Shields through the match with a butt bump in the corner, followed by an elbow. Boom Boom locks in the Billy Goat’s Curse and Sheilds taps out.

Winner: Colt Cabana
After the match, Steve Corino comes out with a microphone to give Cabana a warning. “Be careful who you stick up for,” Corino tells Colt in response to some off camera comments Cabana made towards Kevin Steen. We find out that next week the American Wolves will take on the Dark City Fight Club and we switch back to the parking lot where Ernie Osiris is being attacked by Necro Butcher. Prince Nana is out with Erick Stevens and the brawl is moving in to the building and towards the ring. The refs struggle to break up the fight, but this is out of control. Necro hits the time keeper and grabs a chair. The cameras take us to a break as this fight goes on. During the break, Necro gets thrown onto the chairs he brought into the ring and finally things are broken up as we go to more highlights from the 8th Anniversary show.
During the match between Aries and Black, all kinds of chaos ensue. Jim Cornette gets involves and hit by Tyler Black, but in the end, Black hits the Phoenix Splash for the clear victory and the ROH World Championship.
Kyle Durden is backstage with Jim Cornette who addressed Necro Butcher briefly. He’ll deal with Necro in his own way at his own time. But because of the combustible elements between Black and Aries, Cornette has signed a match next week featuring Tyler Black and Roderick Strong vs. Austin Aries and Kenny King. He refers to the whole combustible situation like smoking a cigar in an ammunitions dump before moving on to deal with Necro Butcher.
Ring of Honor World Tag Team Championships
The Briscos (c.) (Mark and Jay Brisco) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson)
The Briscos made history at Final Battle 2009, winning the ROH World Tag Team Championships for a 6th time and the fans seem fairly divided as the four men shake hands before the bell. Mark Brisco is going to begin this contest against Matt Jackson and the two lock up, Brisco looking to get the advantage early with a belly to back suplex. But these two are fairly evenly matched as action goes back and forth locking in and breaking out of a series of holds. Prazak talks about neither team wanting to take too many risks, early on, as both men tag their respective partners. Nick Jackson comes alive, though, taking advantage of Jay before tagging in Matt. Jay is able to fend off Matt Jackson, however, and swing the momentum in the Briscos favor. The Briscos cut Matt off from his brother for a short time, but Matt fights his way back and tags in his brother. Both teams use solid teamwork as the fans chant “Man Up” and the pendulum swings towards the Briscos again. Matt Jackson is pulled to the floor and thrown into the barricade allowing Jay and Mark to go to work on Nick. Dave Prazak compares the Briscos to the legendary Road Warriors while Hog compares their opponents to the Rock and Roll Express. Nick counters an Irish whip with an elbow, but can’t get to his corner. Jackson then uses his quickness to fly onto the apron and springboard back in onto Jay Brisco. After several seconds on the mat, Nick tags in his brother Matt and the Jacksons use some high flying teamwork to get a near fall. The crowd chants for the Young Bucks, as they try to gain some more momentum, but Mark Brisco is up and in to break things up. Chaos breaks up at all four men exchange places until Nick Jackson and Jay Brisco jockey for position in the ring. The Briscos pour on some offence, but it only leads to a near fall. Jay and Matt fight outside the ring briefly before Matt breaks free to come to his brother’s aid, powerbombing Mark Brisco while he bulldogs Nick Jackson. Matt moves to the corner to get an official tag as he and Mark exchange blows. All four men come in the ring righting for control and the four men exchange double superkicks as all four men collapse to the mat. When he gets to his feet, Mark Brisco looks for the Cutthroat Driver, but it’s countered. Nick Jackson comes in and the Young Bucks look for their combination springboard moves. Jay Brisco breaks things up and the Briscos are look for a Spike Jay Driller, on Matt Jackson. Nick breaks that up and fights Mark outside the ring, but Jay fends off Matt Jackson, propping him up on his shoulders for Mark to connect with the Doomsday Device and the win.
Rating: *** ¾
Winners: The Briscos (Jay and Mark Brosco)
The fans show their appreciation with a “That was awesome” chant as the Briscos retain their titles. The fans also thank Matt and Nick Jackson as both teams shake hands and embrace in a great showing of sportsmanship to end the program.
