In lieu of our recent podcasts going over many of our favorite wrestling companies, I figured it was worth typing a column with some middle of the year awards and then an examination of the burning questions facing a number of companies. Six months into the year we’ve seen so much. A Monday Night War that fizzled out quickly. The resurrection of Ring of Honor. BDK dominating CHIKARA. Dragon Gate continuing to transform the Japanese wrestling scene while experiencing growing pains in the state. Finally the awesomeness of Pro Wrestling Guerilla. At least some things don’t change. This week we’re going to finish up our retrospective on Davey Richards by looking at his 2009 in Ring of Honor. 2009 was a big year for Davey as he held tag gold and put on 2 match of the year candidates against KENTA at Supercard of Honor IV and Austin Aries at the appropriately titles Aries vs. Richards. So read on dear reader and explore Davey Richards’ 2009 with me…

Best of ROH on HDNet DVD Review

Slap my credit card! I bought another wrestling DVD!

-Ring of Honor on HDNet has been a mixed bag. In some ways, the show has been successful because there have been a number of very good matches and minimal commercial breaks allow for uninterrupted action. However, the lack of crowd reaction to a lot of the show and the announcing prevent ROH on HDNet from becoming the best hour of wrestling on a weekly basis. Dragon Gate’s Infinity has that distinction in my view. Nonetheless, there have been some excellent matches, and ROH has finally released a volume of the best of the first three months. Since the term “Volume 1” implies more volumes, there is no doubt we’ll get a whole volume dedicated to the greatness that is the Necro Butcher vs. Embassy feud. For now… Read the rest of this entry

Jerome Cusson and Ryan Rozanski are back for the first part at 2010 so far. They discuss TNA, PWG, and ROH in-depth, all the positives and negatives of each company. Among the topics are Abyss’ character, the failure of the Monday Night Wars, PWG’s rising young local stars, and the concept of the iPPV as a future revenue stream for many other independent wrestling companies. Then, things get a little heated when Ryan and Jerome discuss the MVP of PWG. You the listener can decide who’s right by downloading the podcast right now.

Note: We actually recorded this show just before seeing what the PWG anniversary show would look like. We got the matches down pretty well at least. Download above or listen to live below.

PWG Titannica Review

Far better than the movie Titanic minus the nudity of Kate Winslet

-Taped from Reseda, California

-Your hosts are Excalibur and the Knights of the Roundtable… can’t believe it’s taken me this long to make that joke

-Excalibur talks about the good social work both El Generico and Paul London are doing for the kids. A big pot of 300 dollars is on the line for that match. He also talks about a traumatic experience involving an earthquake and somehow connects it back to the Generico/London match. He mentions the Briscoes being in the building. Considering their past in this company, this is news. He ends by encouraging the fans to drink a little bit to make the show more lively. Read the rest of this entry

With the recent news that Davey Richards will be retiring at the end of the year, I have decided that instead of reviewing a match this week, I’m just going to talk about Davey Richards.
